Judy LoBianco: Judy has been a Supervisor of Health, Physical Education and Nursing Services for over nine years, was honored with the Channing Mann Physical Education Administrator of the Year Award by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) during the 128th Annual National Convention of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD).
Judy will inspire and enlighten the audience with her passion and enthusiasm for the importance of healthy active living and the impact on the academic achievements of our students. Shellie Pfhol: Shellie was appointed by President Barack Obama in February 2010 to serve as Executive Director of the President's Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition. She manages the activities and operations of the Council and leads the Council's efforts related to First Lady Michelle Obama's national Let's Move! initiative to solve childhood obesity within a generation. Shellie earned her BA in Community Health Education from the University of Northern Iowa and a MS in Exercise Physiology/Fitness Leadership from Northern Illinois University. She also has a certification in Non-Profit Management from Duke University and is a graduate of Leadership North Carolina Class XIII. Shellie will update us on PALA, Let's Move in School and other national initiatives.

Helen Eddy: Helen is from West Des Moines, she is the Assistant Vice President, Health and Wellness, for Hy-Vee, Inc. and the Executive Director of the Healthiest State Initiative. She is a graduate of the University of Iowa with a B.S. in Pharmacy in 1982. Helen received her M.B.A. from Drake University in 1984. Helen has been employed by Hy-Vee, Inc. for twenty-five years, holding various positions in pharmacy operations until 2009. In 2009 Helen was named AVP, Health and Wellness. Her responsibilities included Hy-Vee’s retail health and wellness initiatives, such as wellness screenings, pharmacy and dietitian services, and natural and organic products. In 2011, the Healthiest State Initiative was launched, and Helen was named Executive Director in 2012.

Robyn Brezting: PERSONAL MOTTO...
“Every job is a self portrait of the person who does it. Autograph your work with excellence.” Robyn has energized our state in the past, upon request for her to return. IAHPERD is thrilled to her as a keynote speaker and a couple of breakout sessions. Robyn starts her semester with “Work Hard, Get Fit…Stay Fit, Never Quit” Her curriculum offers every student the opportunity to succeed and gain greater self-confidence as they learn lifetime activities and improve personal fitness. We are excited to have her come energize us Monday morning as our keynote and two breakout sessions later in the day. |
Barb Bakker: Prior to arriving at the University of Northern Iowa Barb taught Health Education for 33 years and was head volleyball coach for 24 years in the Dike-New Hartford Community School District in Dike, Iowa. She also served for 10 years as an adjunct instructor in the Health Division at the University of Northern Iowa. Ms. Bakker was the 1989 recipient of the IAHPERD Health Educator of the Year Award. She has been inducted into the University of Northern Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame, the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and the Iowa Girls Coaches Association Volleyball Hall of Fame. She holds several State of Iowa coaching achievements including seven state championships and six state runner-up titles.

Jen Ohlson: Jen has been working directly with school systems in Texas assissting them with reversing obesity in high school student. She will bring her experience with her as a keynote "Health Needs a Hero. Jen is the founder and President of Interactive Health Technologies, LLC (IHT), an organization, who’s “Spirit System” and “PE 3 Course” is transforming physical education nationwide by coupling heart rate monitor technology, web-based software and innovative curriculum with well-being, education, and accountability. Ohlson cultivated her management skills as an elite Division One and All-American athlete, coach, television sports reporter, award-winning and best-selling published author, award-winning filmmaker, and public speaker.
While writing and directing her first feature film, “Health Needs a Hero,” a powerful documentary narrated by Edward James Olmos that details the epidemic of childhood health issues and solutions to reverse the trends. |
Gregory J. Welk: is a Professor in the Department of Kinesiology at Iowa State University. Dr. Welk completed his Masters degree (MS) at the University of Iowa and his Ph.D. at Arizona State University. Prior to coming to ISU, Dr. Welk worked at the Cooper Institute for Aerobics Research where he directed the Childhood and Adolescent Health Division. He has continued serving as the Scientific Director of the FITNESSGRAM program since coming to ISU and focuses much of his research and professional work on the application and utilization of FITNESSGRAM in schools. Dr. Welk’s research has focused on the assessment and promotion of physical activity and fitness, and obesity prevention programming. He is particularly interested in participatory action research in collaboration with schools and communities and these efforts are coordinated through an outreach group he leads called the ISU Community Campus Partnership for Health.

Beth Kirkpatrick: As one of the key architects of the technology movement in Physical Education for over thirty years, Beth oversees IHT’s impact, growth and reach. Her experience and comprehensive understanding of heart rate monitor technology, along with her passion and vision strengthens IHT’s ability to become the gold standard in the educational market. Before joining IHT, Beth was the Director of Education for Polar Electro, Inc. for 18 years, where she was known nationwide and globally as the pioneer of heart rate monitor use in education. Under Beth’s leadership and influence, she motivated her profession to move to the future with technology, while becoming one of the most sought after keynotespeakers in the industry, worldwide. With 20 years of experience teaching health and PE, she has been nationally recognized for her renowned teaching methods and has been the recipient of numerous “Teacher of the Year” and leadership awards. Beth is also the developer of two model PE programs that have gained considerable attention worldwide

Gale Wiedow: Gale currently serves as President of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD). The group's mission is to promote leadership, research, education and best practices in the professions that support healthy and active lifestyles such as physical education, recreation, fitness, sport and coaching, dance, health education and health promotion. As an AAHPERD national spokesperson, Dr. Wiedow promotes quality physical education, physical activity and sport programs and lends expertise to tackle the growing epidemic of physical inactivity in children and the importance of physical activity for everyone. Dr. Wiedow completed both his undergraduate and Master of Arts degrees at the University of Northern Iowa, both in physical education.
